Dr. Katie Toppel, EdD, (@KatieToppel), is a K-5 language specialist serving multilingual learners in kindergarten, first grade, and third grade through co-planning, co-teaching, and small group instruction.
Her background includes experience as an adjunct professor at Portland State University and as a classroom teacher in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade. Katie co-created #MLLChat_BkClub with Tan Huynh and leads book studies for teachers continuing their professional learning on topics related to multilingual learners.
Katie holds a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction and a Masters degree in Special Education with endorsements in special education and English to Speakers of Other Languages.
She lives with her husband and two children in Portland, Oregon.
Tan Huynh (@TanKHuynh) is a career teacher, consultant, and author specializing in language acquisition and literacy development for secondary multilinguals. Tan has taught students from 5th to 10th grade in public, private, charter, and international schools.
He has served as a language specialist and is currently a secondary social studies teacher. Tan shares teaching strategies on his blog, podcast, and courses with the hopes of celebrating teachers who answer the call to serve multilingual learners.
Tan holds a Masters in education and a specialization in language acquisition. He is honored to live in Bangkok, Thailand.
Dr. Carol Salva, EdD (@MsSalvaC) is an award-winning educator with proven success working with unschooled/under-schooled, multilingual learners classified as SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education) or ELD (English Language Development) students. She is a key Seidlitz Education consultant for training, coaching, modeling, and supporting program leaders.
Carol is a co-author of Boosting Achievement: Reaching Students with Interrupted Our Minimal Education and has taught elementary, middle and high school. She also hosts a podcast by the same name.
Carol Salva holds a Doctorate in Ethical Leadership and a Masters degree in Education Administration with a principal certification. Along with her ESL certification, she is a Certified Gomez & Gomez Dual Language Trainer and a Certified Abydos Writing Trainer. She is a Kahoot Ambassador and the co-chair of the NAELPA professional learning committee.
She lives with her husband and three children in Houston, Texas.
